Andrew Wall is a Canadian documentary filmmaker with a passion for finding unique stories and subjects. His award-winning projects have taken him across the globe, from the mountains of Tajikistan to the halls of Oxford University and pretty much everywhere in between.
The Fantasy Makers is a passion project of Andrew’s that was initially inspired by a casual conversation with Dr. Malcolm Guite over the relationship between faith and imagination. It would result in the making of a film that connects the three writers Tolkien, Lewis and MacDonald, who not only had deeply held spiritual convictions but in fact pioneered a genre.
J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and George MacDonald were the pioneers of the fantasy genre and their impact has been unmistakable. Their works—exploring Middle-earth, journeying to Narnia and other tales of redemption, sacrifice and the battle between good and evil—have become bestselling books and blockbuster movies.
Contemporary fantasy writers such as J.K. Rowling grew up inspired by them. All three were deeply committed Christians, and their spiritual convictions permeate their writing. They engaged and challenged from the pulpit of imagination, speaking truth through fantasy. This documentary examines the spiritual influences of these fantasy pioneers and the lasting impact their works have had on our present-day culture.
