A Memphis, Tennessee, native, Eddie Bailey is an Emmy-nominated film and television producer. Having discovered his knack for storytelling during his formative years, Bailey has transformed that passion into a visual art and a successful career. His work includes award-winning collaborations with notable celebrities such as Misty Copeland, Cam Newton and Grammy-nominated gospel group Trin-i-tee 5:7.
Memphis Majic marks Bailey’s debut as a feature-length documentary filmmaker. This is the story of his hometown as seen through the lens of Jookin’—a kinetic street dance style cultivated in the city that explores the rich culture, history and racial politics of Memphis, Tennessee.
Filmmaker Eddie Bailey makes his directorial debut with Memphis Majic to illustrate the critical importance of art in society. This film deftly juxtaposes the evolution of Jookin’ (a Memphis-born dance created by the city’s African-American youth) against the racially charged sociopolitical environment that engulfs the city and takes us on a journey through the lens of cultural revolution.
With its fluid rhythms and a raw narrative, Memphis Majic strives to encourage these young artists to build a brighter future for their city.
