Scientology Network’s DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE, the weekly series providing a platform for Independent filmmakers to air films on important social, cultural and environmental issues, presents the award-winning documentary Breaking Through the Clouds on August 16.
DOCUMENTARY SHOWCASE airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Scientology Network.
On August 18, 1929, 20 pilots set out to defy conventions and take their place among the pioneers of aviation. Breaking Through the Clouds tells their story. For this was a race that challenged stereotypes, reversed traditional gender roles and set the world on fire.
The pilots were women and the race was the first Women’s National Air Derby. But with its challenges came controversy, tragedy and sabotage.
Written and directed by Heather Taylor, Breaking Through the Clouds follows the derby competitors as they don breeches and goggles to navigate through rough weather, mechanical failures, public scrutiny and even rumors of corrupt activity. Among the pilots are famous faces such as Amelia Earhart, as well as 19 other adventurers who raced across the sky with just a compass and a road map to guide them to become the derby’s first champion.
Combining actual footage of the race with aerial recreations, interviews with family of the competitors, aviation experts and legendary pilots Elinor Smith and Patty Wagstaff, Breaking Through the Clouds demonstrates the courage, independence, self-sufficiency, intelligence and grace of these aviators. But above all else, they showed everyone that they were some of the best pilots this world has ever seen.
Heather Taylor is the writer, producer, director and researcher of the award-winning Breaking Through the Clouds. Heather is the foremost authority on the first Women’s National Air Derby and also a recipient of the prestigious Combs Gates Award from the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Heather has written extensively about the women and the derby and created her production company, Archetypal Images, LLC, with a goal of telling inspiring stories to embolden and empower others. Prior to starting her own company, she managed thousands of programming hours for popular shows including Deadliest Catch and American Chopper.
